The purpose of the job is to coordinate, consolidate and promote all library related research to the benefit of the Library’s core information services.

Requirements

· A Honours degree with a minimum of three (3) years relevant experience in a research environment

· Appropriate courses in statistics and research methodologies

· Computer Literacy in respect of office automation packages such as word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, electronic diary and internet, as well as the use of statistical packages, eg Survey Monkey, SPSS, SAS, etc.



Knowledge, skills and capabilities

· Knowledge and understanding of research data analysis and interpretation

· Ability to write research

· Knowledge and understanding of processes, product/services of an academic library

· Knowledge of basic budgeting

· Ability to work under pressure, maintain confidentiality, to work in a team and ability tomeet deadlines.



Duties

· Deliver quality research documents and reports

· Ensure the setting and maintenance of research standards

· Advise and assist Library staff on research matters

· Prioritise research, prepare a research budget and allocate resorces







Assumption of duty : As soon as possible.

Salary : Remuneration is commensurate with the seniority of the position

Research Assistant (contract appointment: 1 year) – H1201-003

Duties and responsibilities:

Perform routine laboratory diagnostics with regard to genetically modified organisms and chronic myeloid leukaemia.
Ensure that the routine laboratory diagnostics with regard to genetically modified organisms and chronic myeloid leukaemia are performed as required.
Ensure quality management of the laboratory performing routine laboratory diagnostics with regard to genetically modified organisms and chronic myeloid leukaemia.
Interpret and communicate the results of routine laboratory diagnostics performed with regard to genetically modified organisms and chronic myeloid leukaemia.

Inherent requirements:

B.Sc. Honours degree in Human Molecular Biology.
Two (2) years’ diagnostic experience in the following laboratory techniques is required:
RNA and DNA extraction
cDNA synthesis
PCR
Real-time quantification
DNA sequencing and gel electrophoresis
Thorough understanding of the routine diagnostics used in the detection of genetically modified organisms.
Thorough understanding of the routine diagnostics used in chronic myeloid leukaemia, including disease load and mutational analysis of BCR-ABL.
Valid driver’s license.

Recommendations:

Experience in human cell culture techniques.
Two (2) years’ experience in the analysis and interpretation of conventional PCR results as well as real-time quantitative PCR and sequencing mutational analysis.
Two (2) years’ experience in laboratory quality management in terms of writing standard operating procedures, performing document control, maintaining equipment as required, and ordering of reagents.

Assumption of duties:
As soon as possible.

The incumbent will be appointed as a Research Officer in the Community-Orientated Nursing Education Project for Women and Child Health (CONEWCH) of the Department of Nursing Science, University of Pretoria (Tshwane Learning Science) and the University of Limpopo (Jubilee Learning Centre (Medunsa Campus).


RESPONSIBILITIES:

It will be expected of the incumbent in this post to:

• Initiate the research programme for the nursing departments in the University of Pretoria and University of Limpopo (Medunsa Campus);
• Assist and support academic staff, nurse practitioners, project team members and postgraduate students with various research projects and activities including:
o preparation of research proposals,
o undertaking systematic review for relevant information,
o writing and editing the project publications,
o communicating the research outputs with stakeholders.



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Masters Degree in a Health/ Social Sciences field;
• Demonstrable research experience and a solid research/ publication track record;
• Ability to work both independently and as a team member;
• Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal) and networking skills.


RECOMMENDATIONS:

• PhD and experience in postgraduate supervision;
• Prior experience in a Higher Education environment and knowledge of higher education administrative procedures;
• Experience in research design, undertaking, commissioning and management of research and research programmes;
• Exposure to the social/health service field;
• Insight and knowledge of Millennium Development Goals;
• Strategic thinking;
• Valid driver’s license.


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of qualification and experience, as determined by UP policy guidelines. (The remuneration for this contract post excludes medical aid and provident fund benefits as determined by UP policy guidelines.)

IOM-Pretoria is seeking to recruit a research institution or a consortium of researchers to undertake a study on “Health vulnerability of men, women and children in mixed migration flows from the East and Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes to Southern Africa”.

Under the direct supervision of the Migration Health Research Officer and joint management by the technical steering committee, the research institution/consortium will lead both the formative research that documents migration patterns, routes, means of transportation, abuses, exploitation, modus operandi of smugglers as detailed in this Terms of Reference (ToR) as well as the health vulnerability component which documents health vulnerabilities of mixed migrants along the same route.
