Key Responsibilities: • Legal consulting support services

Conducting legal and regulatory due diligence investigations
Attendance of and contribution to Group Legal Services legal risk meetings, committees and forums
Providing legal opinions, drafting and negotiating legal reports, term sheets, legal agreements and other legal documentation in respect of investment/Corporate/labour legal matters
Representing the unit on various Management Committees (Corporate Credit Committee and Divisional Committees etc.
Conduct advanced research into a wide variety of legal issues relating to various investment projects
Responsible for legal quality assurance of credit appraisal reports and legal agreements
Attendance of business unit meetings as required
Provide adequate support and timely legal information for the organization’s external and internal audit reviews.
Co-ordinate with the Business Unit for smooth operation of the legal function and review of the system and processes and suggesting improvements for areas of accountability.
Responsible to report on and escalate all legal risks arising from investment/corporate/labour activities
Ensuring the integrity of legal information.
• Ownership, responsibility and accountability

Assume ownership of the allocated divisional legal portfolio
Responsible for the quality assurance of all legal work emanating from the allocated divisional legal portfolio
Co-ordinate and manage work flow from the allocated divisional legal portfolio with a responsible Group Executive for that division
Responsible for management and work allocation between the law advisors for that allocated divisional legal portfolio
Take accountability of delivery of all legal work arising from the allocated divisional legal portfolio
Manage the performance and assume all other management responsibilities of the legal team in the allocated divisional legal portfolio
Manage the relationship between the team and business
Manage the resources in the allocated divisional legal portfolio
Provide regular legal risk report and feedback to the Manager/Divisional Executive: Group Legal Services
• Legal governance

To ensure that the DBSA policies, procedures and practices are aligned to professional practices, principles of good corporate governance and regulatory requirements and contribute to the reputation of the Bank as a sound financial institution.
To have the ability to specify, evaluate and implement legal processes, controls and systems
Manage and monitor the business Unit’s compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements through the implementation of internal controls and procedures in accordance with DBSA compliance standards.
• Tactical Functions

Provide strategic direction and leadership for the Legal Services function.
Provide support and input into the Group Risk Assurance initiatives.
Responsible for the integrity of all legislative and regulatory requirements and other legislative requirements.
Responsible for the accuracy, timeliness and integrity of the Bank’s legal and management information.
• Risk Management

Minimize legal risk to the bank and ensure business continuity and the maintenance of service levels by managing and or identifying, investigating and mitigating all risks associated with the area of responsibility;
• People Management

Provide leadership, guidance and support to the legal team and ensure that the legal service level required is adhered to.
Lead and direct various legal investigations within the DBSA on an ad hoc basis.
Builds positive working relationships and creates cross-functional synergies
Provide direction and management to his / her direct reports to ensure they execute the unit strategy and manage their portfolios effectively.
Manage the day to day activities and performance of the law advisors in respect of specific projects
Managing the performance of the law secretary
Managing the performance of external attorneys involved in projects / matters
Mentoring and training of junior law advisors
Expertise & Technical Competencies: A post graduate qualification or equivalent; preferably LLB Degree.
LLM degree or other relevant qualification will be an advantage
Sound understanding of Project Finance/Corporate Finance/IPPs/PPPs/Private Equity Funds/Municipal and Public Sector Financing/International Finance/Grants and Technical Assistance/Agency Arrangements/Corporate Legal Advisory Services/Litigation/Labour Law and Labour Litigation
Required Personal Attributes: Minimum 5-10 years experience
A minimum of 5 years experience in a Leadership or Management position within a Legal environment.
A minimum of 5 years experience in the Commercial or Corporate Law field or Labour practice
Admitted attorney / advocate of the High Court of South Africa
Sound knowledge of all applicable legislation
Exceptional writing skills; concept documents, reports (including analytical), memos, agreements, policies, letters, presentations, etc (at different levels –Board, Executives, Management, Staff and other key Stakeholders)
Knowledge of Microsoft Office (MS-Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook)
Strong experience in Project Finance/Corporate Finance/IPPs/PPPs/Private Equity Funds/Municipal and Public Sector Financing/International Finance/Grants and Technical Assistance/Agency Arrangements/Corporate Legal Advisory Services/Litigation/Labour Law and Labour Litigation
Excellent negotiation skills
Good drafting and vetting skills
Excellent dispute / conflict resolution skills
Research skills at an advanced level
Experience in strategy formulation and execution
Strong business acumen and strategic advisory experience
Ability to communicate superbly at all levels (verbal and written)
Strategic advisory experience
Management skills to motivate and lead subordinates to achieve desired outcomes
