The purpose of the job is to provide strategic direction and leadership to the
functions listed below, across all 5 campuses and affiliate institutions where relevant:
• Business Intelligence is the collation of data from multiple sources throughout the
University and from sources outside the University in order to provide not only upto-
date management information, but also to have historical data available for
trend analysis and benchmarking in order to facilitate forward looking
management decision making based on the anticipation of events/situations
from the projection of trends.
• Shared Services provides the centralised administrative backbone for a
department approaching 150 people. Efficient and effective administrative
services realises efficiencies in the operations of ICS and removes some of the
administration burden from the technical services. Furthermore, the printing
operation in the University is the largest print and copy service in the province
and competes as one of the largest operations of its kind in South Africa.
Centralised and co-ordinated replacement cycles for end user technology
allowing ICS to utilise economies of scale and leverage buying discounts.
• Academic Computing involves the exercise of organisation wide influence over
the re-organisation and enhancement of information technology to enable the
effective integration of computing and related technologies into the teaching,
learning and research processes. Engaging, advising and guiding faculty
discussions and decision-making processes on the capability of emerging
technology to enhance the pedagogy. It is important to make reference to
research and related practices to drive a strategy that gives clarity to the
purpose, role and benefit of IT supported education at the University.
• Innovate, provide strategic direction and apply experience in order to achieve
business process, service delivery and/or cost efficiencies.
• Due to the specialised nature of this section, maintaining networks with peers in
institutional academic/research technology and staying in touch with emerging
technologies is a requirement. Leading staff into strategic and leading edge
technologies and solutions is a critical success factor.
• Effectively execute financial responsibilities with respect to budgeting, monitoring
spend against budget, achieving cost efficiencies and conforming to the
Universities procurement policies and procedures.
Minimum Requirements:
• Relevant research or metrics based (maths, stats or other relevant) masters
degree, or equivalent post graduate qualification.
• Five (5) years' relevant experience at a senior management level, including staff
management, budget preparation and divisional administration, and
• Five (5) years’ experience in the provision of Management Information,
Institutional Planning and Institutional Research, in a busy and pressurised
environment in a large organisation.
Advantages:
