JOB TITLE: EXECUTIVE DEAN

(Five-year contract)

Unisa is the only publicly funded Higher Education Institution in South Africa dedicated to distance education. In keeping with its mandate as a comprehensive, Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Institution offering a variety of academic and career-focused programmes, Unisa is inviting applications for the position of Executive Dean: College of Economics and Management Sciences.

Roles and responsibilities



An Executive Dean is an executive officer of the College, S/he is a member of the Extended Management Committee of the University, and is required to advance the strategic goals, academic objectives and the management philosophy of the University. The incumbent reports to the Vice-Principal Academic: Teaching and Learning and provides strategic leadership to the College of Economics and Management Sciences to ensure that the College is functioning in line with the overall vision and mission of Unisa. S/he also has to ensure that the College becomes a centre of excellence in the fields of Economics and Management Sciences with regard to tuition, learning, research, and community engagement in South Africa and on the African continent.

S/he does so by



· leading the implementation of the strategy in the College

· critically reviewing current approaches to the teaching and learning of Economics, Accounting and Management Sciences

· envisioning and establishing relevant educational programmes in the College in response to national needs and those of the continent that are in line with Unisa’s strategic building and securing sound relations with relevant stakeholders and the community

· establishing and maintaining a collaborative approach with regard to tuition and community engagement within the College of Economics and Management Sciences

· promoting cutting-edge research in the field of Economics and Management Sciences

· assuming responsibility for transformation and change management in the College of Economics and Management Sciences



Requirements



· A relevant doctoral degree

· At least ten years’ experience in the higher education sector of which at least five years should be at senior/middle management level

· A proven academic record and a recognised scholar in the field of Economics and Management Sciences, with a good grasp of evolving trends

· Demonstrated experience in, and expert knowledge of, teaching and learning

· Sound track record as an academic leader with proven experience and involvement in leadership and management at the level of college, faculty and/or school

· Knowledge and insight into the challenges facing higher education in South Africa.

· Knowledge of open distance learning

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

· Excellent managerial and administrative skills



Assumption of duties: As soon as possible

Salary: Remuneration is commensurate with the seniority of the position
