Job Title : UNIT MANAGER EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
LOCATION: MASERU
REPORTING TO: GENERAL MANAGER EMERGENCY TRAUMA, TRANSPLANT AND CSI

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Unit Manager Emergency Department will assume overall responsibility for the effective
coordination of improved quality nursing care by ensuring compliance to professional and ethical
practice.
The Unit Manager will also be responsible for monitoring and ensuring that nursing care and service
delivery is implemented and practiced within a multi‐disciplinary quality assurance team.
The incumbent will further be required to ensure effective skills transfer whilst being accountable for
coordinating capacity building, mentoring and training within the medical emergency unit.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Patient care
Oversee the provision of safe and cost effective quality patient care in line with the clinical
governance strategy
Promotion of health and well‐being
Ensure that the principles of infection prevention and all standard precautions are adhered to
Identify quality improvement opportunities and ensure appropriate strategy and quality
improvement initiatives are developed and measured
Implement group quality initiatives
Manage negative incidents and implement remedial action as required.
Risk management
Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant protocols, policies and acts
Investigate all negative incidents and ensure appropriate capturing on the Helpdesk
Monitor safety standards in accordance with the Machine and Occupational Safety Act (Act 6 of
1983)
Report all accidents and incidents
Ensure that all equipment is in working order and properly maintained
Ensure control of asset register

Cost management
Manage acuities and skills mix to ensure cost effective quality care
Manage all costs emanating from the emergency department
Ensure correct billing, stock management and purchasing
Reporting
Evaluate effective service provision through patient experience and stakeholder input
Evaluate nursing quality indicators and clinical outcomes
Stakeholder relationships
Build and maintain effective relationships with doctors, staff, patients and visitors
Ensure effective management of doctor and patient complaints
Build strategic interdepartmental relationships
People development
Foster an environment where staff are aware of the role they play in the provision of quality patient
care and their value to the organization
Foster an environment in which roles and responsibilities are clearly understood and accountability is
taken
Manage and supervise staff and all related issues
Monitor staff attendance and/or absenteeism and ensure action is taken accordingly
Enforce staff dress code within and on leaving the Hospital
Coordinate nursing activities within the unit
Ensure orientation of new staff and students
Ensure ongoing performance reviews for all staff
Facilitate staff development, personally and professionally
Coach and mentor staff as required
Personal and professional development
Assume responsibility for own personal and professional development
Keep up to date with Lesotho’s evolving policies and procedures
Keep abreast of current research in their discipline
Administration
Facilitate timeous and accurate compilation of patient files

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
A relevant nursing qualification (Diploma in General Nursing/ B Cur Degree)
Registration with the South African Nursing Council/Lesotho Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse
Compliance with the South African Nursing Council/Lesotho Nursing Council code for a Registered
Nurse and all applicable health care legislations
Minimum 2 years experience in a private hospital setting would be advantageous
Experience in clinical leadership
