Job Title: Mental Health Counsellor
The Centre for Public Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health has been awarded a research grant to conduct and build capacity for intervention research in sub-Saharan Africa: the Africa Focus on Intervention Research for Mental health (AFFIRM). AFFIRM will work in 6 sub-Saharan African countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe) over a 5 year period. We are seeking to appoint a full-time Mental Health Counsellor on a 4-year fixed term contract, to provide training and supervision of community health workers who will offer counseling to depressed women during the perinatal period.
Requirements:

• A B.Psych Counsellor (4-year) qualification or equivalent
• At least 3 years’ experience working as a counsellor
• Experience in counseling women and maternal mental health would be preferable
• Ability to communicate fluently in isiXhosa and English is essential
Responsibilities:
• Ensuring and monitoring the effective mental health screening and enrolment of clients in the AFFIRM trial
• Provision of training and ongoing support and supervision for community health workers who will provide therapeutic counselling for depressed pregnant and postnatal women
• Administration, monitoring and evaluation of cases
• Liaison with project staff and clinical staff
The annual remuneration package for this full-time position, is in the range R200,452 – R235,811, and will be determined by the incumbent’s qualifications and experience.
