The Synfuels Metallurgical Engineering Department within Sasol Synfuels provides materials, corrosion and welding engineering support, primarily to the petrochemical operations facility based in Secunda. This support is normally by way of providing subject matter expertise on a consultative basis, aimed primarily at assisting maintenance and operations personnel achieve sustainable production by maintaining the integrity of equipment facing a vast array of petrochemical metallurgical damage mechanisms associated with the many diverse and complex processes. In its efforts to constantly improve the in-house expertise, exciting opportunities have been created for individuals with qualifications and experience in the fields of physical metallurgy, corrosion engineering/science and welding engineering.

-•Bachelor’s Degree with a Postgraduate
qualification in Welding Engineering
-•IIW accreditation will be an advantage
-•A minimum of 5 years experience as a Welding
Engineer in a plant or fabrication environment
-•A knowledge of petrochemical damage
mechanisms will be an advantage
-•Excellent verbal and report writing skills
-•Ability to work independently, as well as part of
multi-disciplinary engineering teams
-•Willingness to travel occasionally
Responsibilities
-•Provide technical support and expertise on
complex welding engineering challenges at the
Synfuels petrochemical facility
-•Assistance with the qualification of welding
procedures, with a specific emphasis on exotic
materials
-•Development and implementation of weld overlay
technologies (claddings and hardfacings) for
demanding applications
-•Assistance with the management and QC of the
welding procedure database
-•Keeping abreast of advances in welding
technology and evaluating the feasibility of
implementation
-•Implementation of new welding and surfacing
technologies
-•Conducting failure analyses on failed welded
equipment and components
-•Providing advice on heat treatment and managing
the database of equipment subjected to
repeated post weld heat treatment cycles
-•Evaluating of fabrication documentation and
quality control plans
-•Providing advice on specification interpretations
and deviations
-•Providing subject matter support on vendor
accreditations
