Introduction

The U.S. Consulate General in Johannesburg is seeking an individual for the position of Electrician Class 1 in the Facilities Maintenance Unit (FMU).

ALL ORDINARILY RESIDENT APPLICANTS WHO ARE NOT SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENS MUST HAVE THE REQUIRED WORK AND/OR PERMANENT RESIDENCY PERMITS TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.
Minimum Requirements

NOTE:  ALL APPLICANTS MUST ADDRESS EACH SELECTION CRITERION DETAILED BELOW WITH SPECIFIC AND COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION SUPPORTING EACH ITEM.

Items 1- 5 are ALL REQUIRED
1.      Education:
-          Completion of secondary school standard 10 (grade 12) is required.
-          N-3 Certificate and three years electrical apprenticeship including trades test exam is required.
2.      Experience:  A minimum of five years work experience (including period spent in apprenticeship) maintaining the systems and equipment found residential and office buildings is required.
3.      Language:  English level IV (fluent) writing/reading/speaking is required.
4.      Knowledge:
-          Knowledge of local laws and regulations and practices and procedures governing the electrical trade is required.
-          A solid working knowledge of UPS, generators, transfer switches, main switchgear units, power distribution, computerized controls and high tension voltage is required.
-          Knowledge of established trade practices and procedures is required.
5.      Skills and Abilities:
-          Ability to trouble shoot and repair circuits down to the component level is required.
-          Ability to safely use all hand and power tools associated with the electrical trade is required.
-          Ability to use tact and courtesy when dealing with Embassy staff, colleagues and vendors in the discharge of their duties is required.
-          Ability to troubleshoot problems at the building and residences is required.
-          Possession of valid Driver’s License is required.  
-          Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.
Job Specification

The incumbent will be responsible to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair and perform scheduled preventative maintenance on all electrical systems, equipment and appliances in residential and office buildings.  The incumbent should be able to make repairs to complex electrical systems and equipment, including UPS, emergency generators and computerized equipment interfaces.

Basic Salary:  R168,006 – R235,205 per annum
Cash Benefits: R54,061 – R59,660 per annum
Non-cash benefits include medical, pension and others where applicable
